tag-ulan

Now na. Goodnight!

the rain reminds me

"SHIRIMIRI" fragmento

- Gabriel Celaya

Llueve y llueve
?Que delicia sentirse en lo fluyente,
ser un hombre corriente-

Llueve: Fiel definicion
de lo que empieza y no acaba,
divinamente sin yo.

Llueve y llueve, y llueve. Llueve,
llueve con constancia, amor
de lo que siempre vuelve!

Llueve y llueve. Nada pasa.
Es decir, pasa la nada.
Llueve tan, tan de verdad, que se descansa.

Llueve sin mas. Llueve tonto.
Mal tiempo!, dice la gente que vino a veranear.
Ay que buen tiempo sin tiempo!, digo yo.

Tomorrow PGMA will address the nation and tell us how well our country is doing in spite of the global economic and environmental crises. Then why am I so not looking forward to hearing it?

Odd in Odessa?

This is the Odessa Opera House in Ukraine, touted to be one of the finest architectural structures in Europe, once host to
concerts conducted by Peter Tchaikovsky and ballets featuring Anna Pavlova.

I've not been there yet, but my poster has. Courtesy of my friend Vicky. Wahah! Thanks, Vick. :-)

solar eclipse

There was a solar eclipse visible in the Philippines today but by the time I remembered to look up, it was already past twelve noon and there was no more eclipse to be seen.

This image here was taken by Azrael Coladilla when a partial solar eclipse was visible in Manila in January of this year.

dumaguete is sick

Literally.

A wave of fever, cough and colds has been sweeping the city since last week, affecting citizens of all ages. In fact, today and tomorrow, classes in the high school, elementary and early childhood education departments of Silliman University have been suspended for sanitation purposes. The staff are going to disinfect the school premises as so many students have been sick these past days.

Though classes in the collegiate and post-grad levels have not been suspended, the university physician's clinic has been flooded with students with the exact same symptoms of fever, cough and colds. Many of my own students in the medical school have been/are sick, too, and we get lots of coughs and sniffles in class, from both students and teachers alike.

I hope this sick wave passes over soon. Such a bummer, it is.

getting acquainted

The colorful invitation the students made for our acquaintance party:

As we only had softdrinks and water during the party last night, I think the coffee to cocktails theme the students made was more wishful thinking rather than fact. Four weeks into medical school and our freshmen are semi-dazed and semi-delirious, struggling to adjust to grueling lecture days and migraine-inducing study nights. They're wishing there were more hours for sleep and less body parts to memorize! Not to mention the enzymes and chemical reactions that just continue to increase in number and complexity as the chapters to read unrelentingly pile up.

I hope their mental muscles have sufficiently been 'warmed up' this past month so we can all proceed full throttle to the 'meat and bones' of medicine. (Eherm.)

nautical mile(stone)

A nautical mile is a special unit of measurement used by all nations for air and sea travel. It is equivalent to 1.852 kilometers or 1.1508 miles. A milestone is an important event, as in a person's career, the history of a nation, or the advancement of knowledge in a field; a turning point.

Though I did not swim anywhere near 1.1508 miles, today has been a milestone in my 'swimming career' (oo, kina-career ko na ito, haha!) because today I did twenty laps at the Aqua Center, whoohoo! And that's 2 laps of breaststroke and 18 laps of free style, which is a big achievement for me already because though I could swim breaststroke like forever, several months ago I could not finish one lap of free style without stopping two or three times by the gutter.

So how did it happen? I think it was a combination of several things. First, would be my eavesdropping on the swim coaches giving instructions to the Negros Oriental Swim Team as they practice everyday, those lithe little bodies doing their laps tirelessly back and forth, back and forth, their arms slicing the water cleanly and their legs pumping to the coaches' barks of "Kick harder!"

Second would probably be all that studying of muscle physiology that I've been doing for my classes, I got to know and understand the energetics of muscle contraction (you can go anaerobic glycolysis for short bursts of speed but for the long haul it has to be oxidative phosphorylation, so learn how to breath properly!) as well as the adaptations muscles make when subjected to constant training (making more mitochondria, more motor unit recruitment, better energy extraction efficiency, etc).

Third would probably be the cup of coffee and two cheese rolls I had two hours before the swim, adenosine triphosphate sources ftw.

And finally, I think this is the clincher: my brand new swim goggles!! My good old red Nike chrome ultralight goggles have retired, the rubber had softened and run, the lenses have blurred because some of the red rubber have actually melted into the plastic. I tried and tested almost all the goggles at Lee Plaza and this all-black, double-strapped Aryca had the perfect fit. It was kind of ostentatious being reflectorized and looking like it was meant for biking than for swimming but this one hugged my eyes perfectly while the others pinched and puckered, so it wasn't such a difficult decision to make. And after today's break-in swim, I think it's pretty cool. 8-)

karaoke kraze

No, they're not crazy.

Or so they said. Or rather, sang.

It was a cool and cloudy Saturday afternoon yesterday, just perfect for studying the intricate mechanics of the neuromuscular junction, in preparation for next week's lectures. My diligent concentration was disturbed though, by enthusiastic neighbors who were having a rowdy karaoke session with aspiring singers whose voices were many octaves removed from pleasant- to-listen-to.

I scoured the neighborhood from our back-balcony, trying to figure out exactly where the blaring 'noise' was coming from, having half a mind to go and ask the perpetrators to please tone down their stereo volume. A female voice was polluting the air by screeching "I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell, I know right now..." Two songs later, a male voice croaks "I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell..." again?! I could hardly believe it. They may not be crazy but they were driving me, who needs utter quiet when studying, nuts with their inconsiderately loud singing.

What to do? What to do?

May I dial 166, the police hotline. "Good afternoon, Sir, may I report so and so for disturbing the peace, etc. etc.?" Well, I learned something new from the police officer. He said, "We can't do anything about that, Ma'am, because it is daytime and they are singing in the vicinity of their home. They have a right to do that. If it is nighttime, then we can call their attention about disturbing the sleeping neighbors. But since it is just 3 o'clock in the afternoon..." Awwk. Ganoon?!

This karaoke singing that Filipinos love so much has been cause of much joy and much contention as well. The karaoke singers have great fun belting out the lyrics flashed onscreen, but sometimes, if not often, the emotive vocalists get carried away with their singing, they don't want to relinquish the microphone to anybody else anymore, which would not be a problem really if they had even just passable singing voices. In fact, in many karaoke bars in the Philippines, Frank Sinatra's 'My Way' has been removed from the songlist because not a few inebriated karaoke-ers have gotten into fist-fights or even knife- and gun- fights over 'Whose Way' is better than the others.

Such was my dilemma, one supposed-to-be-a-study-Saturday afternoon. Unable to study but not wanting to be at loggerheads with my neighbors who only wanted a relaxed and fun (for them) afternoon of karaoke singing, I packed my swim gear and headed for the Aqua Center.

with a vengeance

But of course. After yesterday's frustration, I went to the pool apprehensive but hopeful that no bronchoconstrictive dampeners would spoil today's swim. Thankfully, ye olde lungs held up and I was able to do twelve laps in peace. :-) Salamat, Salbutamol!
